چکیده

R. T. de Souza Department of Chemistry and Indiana University Cyclotron Facility, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana 47405 (Received 15 March 1996) Based on measured correlations between experimental observables in the 209Bi 1 136Xe reaction at EyA 28 MeV, it is shown that multiple intermediate-mass fragment (IMF) production is a dynamical process driven by the energy of relative motion of projectilelike and targetlike fragments. This kinetic energy is converted into thermal energy of the system, until a certain “saturation” value of approximately 3 MeVynucleon is reached. From this point on, this “conventional” dissipation mechanism is replaced by dynamical IMF production, constituting a new mode of energy dissipation. [S0031-9007(96)01493-7]

Dynamical approach to heavy ion-induced fission

Deep inelastic collisions (DICs) can compete strongly with fusion in collisions of heavy nuclei. However, standard coupled-channels calculations do not take DIC process into account. As a result, calculations have been shown to overestimate the fusion cross-section and thus lead to a discrepancy between experimental data and theoretical calculations, particularly at energies above the fusion ba...

Can dissipation prevent explosive decomposition in high-energy heavy ion collisions?

We discuss the role of dissipation in the explosive spinodal decomposition scenario of hadron production during the chiral transition after a high-energy heavy ion collision. We use a Langevin description inspired by microscopic nonequilibrium field theory results to perform real-time lattice simulations of the behavior of the chiral fields. We show that the effect of dissipation can be dramati...

Realistic fusion barriers are calculated in a macroscopic-microscopic model for several soft-fusion heavy-ion reactions leading to heavy and superheavy elements. The results obtained in such a realistic picture are very different from those obtained in a purely macroscopic model. For reactions on 208 Pb targets, shell effects in the entrance channel result in fusion-barrier energies at the touc...

Polymeric Materials Research with Cyclotrons P.yu.apel

Ion beams from cyclotrons as a source of radiation with extremely high linear energy transfer (LET) are considered. Basic processes of energy dissipation in heavy ion tracks are reviewed and the main parameters characterizing the effects of accelerated heavy ions on matter are given in relation to the effects of low-LET radiation. Modification of polymers by using cyclotron beams is discussed w...

Angular momentum dependence of complex fragment emission.

The angular momentum dependence of large fragment production in long lived reactions is studied by measurements of fragment cross sections from reactions with substantially different angular momentum distributions and the coincident y-ray multiplicity distributions. The results indicate that the primary l-wave distributions move to larger mean values and decrease in width and skewness with incr...
